Here via your Recovering Perfectionist. ;) .

In Japanese martial arts, the beginners mind is called Shoshin. I am a long-time horse-woman, and one day a friend and I were talking about our passions. He said the way I talked about horses and horsemanship made him think I might enjoy aikido.

That was almost 5 years ago, and today, I can’t imagine not doing aikido, and I think a very big part of that was being reminded of the value of shoshin, of just accepting that you don’t have to be perfect, that it’s ok to make mistakes.

I took a temporary job about 6months ago, a real departure from my usual career path. I wrote Shoshin on a post it and kept it taped to my monitor for months. I recently started a new professional position, IN my career field. A field in which I am supposed to have knowledge and expertise. I still think that Shoshin will be a good mindset to approach this with. And so I am about to write a new post-it note.

But all of that said, I also try to bring shoshin to my activities with horses, because they constantly remind me how much I have yet to learn!

You know, as I scan your website, I see that you use Peggy Cummings ground work, so I want to follow up my previous comment by saying that it was Peggy who gave me the resources to first embrace shoshin, because I did a 2 week clinic/retreat with her about 6 months before starting aikido, and her emphasis on remembering to remember, and her focus on what is working, started a shift in my entire world view which continues to have repercussions today.

Oh, and the reactive, nervous, unhappy, anti-social dominant mare I took to the clinic? Is not perfect, but is WAY more friendly today.

Hi Paula. Nice to meet someone else who has taken good things home from a Peggy clinic. Amazing what a little ripple in the world view can turn into! And how fascinating when our passions can intersect in interesting and enlightening ways.

“Shoshin” – what a nice word. I’ll remember that. I wonder what word our recovering perfectionist friend has on a sticky note in her workspace?

Best of luck with the new job … and if you ever lose your way there, no doubt your mare will have some ideas about how to keep you on track!

Actually, one of the reasons I’m having fun learning how to ride is because I don’t feel pressured to excel at it, like I did when I was a music major or with the writing (i.e., “This is my chosen career, must be good now!”) And since I missed out on the “OMG horses” phase lots of girls go through (though I never lost the “must have animals around all the time” phase) I don’t have any preconceptions of a what a rider could or should be doing, so it works just fine for me to figure it out as I go along.

And it’s as much Carrma and her personality as it is anything else; I still think it’s the coolest thing in the world that she wants to spend time with me and makes an effort to do so. I really needed that when I moved out here, and it certainly helps to have someone depending on you when starting something new to keep you going.

And I’m enjoying lessons; haven’t had any since music school, and I’m just realizing how much I’ve missed them. And I think I was a bit zoned out after the lesson because while I’m used to having lessons and being made to think, the physical part adds a whole dimension I’m not used to, especially when tiny little physical things (*coughshoulderscough*) can really affect how the horse reacts. Lots to think about all at the same time, which is similar to playing music but in a very different way.

      Traci,

That is lovely — and no doubt Carrma knew you needed her, and well, she wins in this situation, too ;) .

And oh yes. shoulders. *smiles knowingly* If it helps, I HAVE been for 30 years, and consistently for 20, and um, I STILL have to remember to remember the tiny little things. Like, oh, say, breathing!
